The most intensively managed solitary bee in the world, and the animal that makes alfalfa seed production possible. Honey bees learn to rob alfalfa flowers from the side to avoid being struck on the head by the tripping mechanism, which means they gather nectar and pollinate nothing. The alfalfa leafcutter bee tolerates being tripped, and North American seed growers deploy it by the hundreds of millions.

Can it sting?

Females have a very mild sting and use it only if squeezed. Growers and researchers handle these bees in enormous numbers with minimal protection. Males cannot sting.

How to recognise it

A small stocky grey-black leafcutter bee, around 7-9 mm, with pale hair bands on the abdomen and a broad blunt-ended body. The female carries pollen dry on the underside of the abdomen, giving a foraging bee a pale yellow belly.

Each female builds and provisions her own nest with no workers and no caste. Most of the world's bee species.

Uses existing tubular cavities of around 5-7 mm, and in managed systems this means grooved polystyrene or wooden boards holding tens of thousands of tunnels, housed in field shelters. Each cell is built from neat oval pieces of leaf cut with the mandibles — the female cuts a disc in seconds and flies off with it held beneath her — glued into a thimble, provisioned, sealed with a circular leaf cap.

Lifecycle

  1. EmergenceAdults emerge in midsummer, timed in managed systems by controlling incubation temperature so that emergence coincides exactly with alfalfa bloom.June to July.
  2. NestingThe female cuts leaves, builds and provisions cells and lays, working alone for roughly six weeks.Four to eight weeks.
  3. OverwinteringThe larva completes feeding and overwinters as a prepupa in its leaf cell. In managed systems the cells are stripped from the boards, cleaned, X-rayed for parasites and stored at controlled temperature until the following season.Roughly ten months.

Where it lives and what it does

Habitat
Alfalfa seed fields and surrounding farmland; in its native range, dry open country and scrub.
Distribution
Native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. Introduced accidentally to North America in the 1930s and now the backbone of the alfalfa seed industry in the American northwest and the Canadian prairies. Also managed in Australia and elsewhere.
Behaviour
Fast, efficient and tolerant of crowding, which is what makes intensive management possible. Its defining behavioural trait for agriculture is a willingness to keep working alfalfa despite being repeatedly struck by the tripping staminal column — a mechanical annoyance honey bees learn to avoid within a day or two.
Pollination role
The dominant pollinator of alfalfa grown for seed across North America, and a highly effective one because it trips the flowers rather than robbing them. Its introduction transformed alfalfa seed yields, and the crop's economics depend on it. It also pollinates other legumes, carrots and some brassica seed crops.

Very high on alfalfa and other legumes, and specifically because it tolerates the tripping mechanism.

A legume specialist by preference, and a broad generalist in practice.

None. Solitary, one pollen provision per cell, no colony.

Relationship with people

How people interact with it
One of only a handful of bees genuinely domesticated, and the clearest example of a managed pollinator that is not a honey bee. The management system is industrial — incubators, X-ray screening, cell tumbling, controlled emergence — and bears no resemblance to beekeeping at all.
Management
Managed by supplying nesting boards in field shelters, harvesting the completed cells at season's end, cleaning and screening them for the chalkbrood and parasitic wasps that build up in dense populations, and incubating to time emergence with bloom. Disease management is the central difficulty, exactly as it is with any intensively kept animal.
Conservation
Not of conservation concern — it is a managed, introduced and abundant species in North America. The relevant question is the opposite one: dense managed populations are a route for pathogen spillover into native Megachile species, which is not well quantified.
