The number that reframes everything else
There are around 20,000 bee species worldwide and only about eightare honey bees. Roughly 90% are solitary — one female, one nest, no colony, no queen, no honey and essentially no stinging. Nearly everything people know about "bees" is drawn from one exceptional species, and the generalisation causes real problems: the honey bee is not threatened, and adding hives to help bees puts competitors alongside the wild species that are.

Around 500 tropical species in their own tribe, Meliponini, keep perennial colonies and store honey — and theirs is a genuinely different product. It runs 25 to 30 per cent water against 17 to 18 for honey bee honey, so it ferments rather than crystallises, and it cannot meet a Codex standard written for Apis mellifera. Three separate beekeeping traditions grew up around them, none descended from European practice.
