Bees vs wasps
Bees are wasps that gave up hunting. The split is roughly 120 million years old, it happened once, and almost every difference people notice follows from that single dietary change.
Which to choose
This is an identification rather than a purchase. In practice: furry and on a flower means bee, leave it entirely alone; shiny, waisted and on your drink means wasp, also best left alone. Do not swat either — a swatted wasp releases an alarm pheromone that recruits others, and a swatted bee is usually a bee that was never going to sting you. If a nest genuinely needs removing because it is beside a doorway or a child's play area, call someone; if it does not, a wasp nest is an annual structure that will be dead by winter and never reused.
Why these get compared
Because most people cannot reliably tell them apart, and because the consequences of getting it wrong run in both directions — harmless solitary bees killed as wasps, and genuinely defensive social wasp nests approached as though they were bees. It is also one of those distinctions that becomes easy the moment you know what actually separates them.

Where the difference is overstated
That wasps are useless and aggressive and bees are useful and gentle. Social wasps are important predators, most wasp species are solitary and harmless, and honey bee colonies are considerably more defensive than a solitary bee — or a solitary wasp — will ever be.
