Bumblebee nest vs honey bee swarm
Two things people find in a garden and describe with the same words, and the correct response to each is the opposite of the other: leave one entirely alone, and telephone somebody about the other today.
Which to choose
Not a choice so much as an identification. If it is a hole with a handful of large furry bees, leave it and it will be gone by September. If it is a hanging cluster of thousands, ring a beekeeper today — most collect free, and it is far easier while the bees are hanging in the open than after they have moved into a roof. If the insects are smooth, waisted and bright yellow going into a papery grey nest, they are wasps and this comparison does not apply.
Why these get compared
Both are reported as 'a bees' nest in the garden' and they are not remotely the same event. One is a small annual colony that will disappear by autumn without intervention; the other is a temporary cluster of thousands looking for a permanent home, which a beekeeper will usually collect free within hours. Getting the identification wrong leads either to needless pest control or to a colony moving into a wall cavity.

Where the difference is overstated
That either is dangerous to a household going about its business. Neither is, absent a venom allergy or direct interference. Pest control marketing does not distinguish between bees and wasps, and most 'bee nest removal' sold in gardens is either unnecessary or aimed at the wrong animal.
