Clover vs alfalfa honey
The two great mild legume honeys of North America and northern Europe. They are genuinely similar, and the differences are small enough to be worth stating precisely.
Which to choose
Either, for everyday use. Clover if you want a fractionally warmer flavour or a creamed honey; alfalfa if you want the palest and cleanest. Both are among the best value honeys available and both are the right answer for tea, baking and children.
Why these get compared
Both are the default mild honey in their markets, both come from fodder legumes, and both are frequently blended together and sold simply as honey. Anyone comparing them is choosing an everyday jar.

Where the difference is overstated
Any meaningful difference. These two are more similar than almost any other pair in this catalogue, and anyone agonising over the choice is optimising the wrong variable.
The interesting difference is in the field, not the jar
Alfalfa flowers have a tripping mechanism: the staminal column is held under tension and snaps upward when a bee pushes in, striking the visitor on the head. Honey bees find this unpleasant and quickly learn to rob the flower from the side instead, which feeds them and does not pollinate it.
This is why alfalfa seed production in North America relies on the alkali bee and the alfalfa leafcutter bee, both of which tolerate being hit. Honey bees produce alfalfa honey in quantity and are poor alfalfa pollinators, which is one of the clearer cases where visitation and pollination are not the same thing.
