Honey bee vs stingless bee
Two social bees that both store honey, kept by people on different continents for thousands of years. One produces sixty kilograms a year and one produces one, and the difference explains a great deal about which tradition survived.
Which to choose
Where both are possible, they answer different questions. Honey bees for honey at any scale. Stingless bees for a small space, a household with children, pollination of specific native plants, or because the tradition is worth keeping — and in the Yucatán and northern Australia that last reason is doing most of the work. Do not judge stingless bee honey against honey bee honey; it is thinner and sourer by nature, not by fault.
Why these get compared
Stingless bees were the honey bees of the tropical Americas, Australia and southeast Asia long before Apis arrived, and the arrival of a far more productive competitor nearly ended those traditions. The comparison is the clearest case in the catalogue of yield displacing culture.

Where the difference is overstated
That stingless bees are harmless in an absolute sense. They cannot sting and they bite, crawl into hair and ears, and in some Trigona species apply secretions that raise blisters. Disturbing a colony is unpleasant rather than dangerous, which is not the same as nothing happening.
