A managed hive vs a wild colony
Wild honey bee colonies still exist in Europe and North America, and they live differently from managed ones in ways that turn out to matter for disease.
Which to choose
Not a choice for a beekeeper, but a set of things worth borrowing. Wider hive spacing, allowing propolis rather than scraping it off, smaller brood volumes and accepting some swarming all move a managed apiary toward how wild colonies live, and there is reasonable argument that each helps.
Why these get compared
The existence of surviving wild colonies in varroa's presence is one of the more interesting questions in current bee research, and it bears directly on how hives should be kept.

Where the difference is overstated
The claim that wild colonies are varroa-resistant and treatment is therefore unnecessary. Surviving populations exist and are studied; that is not evidence that an untreated managed apiary in a different setting will survive, and untreated colonies in most of the world die within two to three years.
