Mānuka vs kānuka honey
Two New Zealand scrub honeys from trees that grow side by side, look similar and yield honeys with almost nothing in common chemically. For years the cheaper one was sold as the expensive one.
Which to choose
For eating, kānuka, comfortably — it is a pleasant everyday honey at an everyday price and it does the job most people imagine manuka doing at the table. Choose mānuka if you specifically want the flavour, which is unlike anything else and worth trying once, or if you specifically want verified methylglyoxal content and understand what that does and does not buy. Buy the lowest audited rating that meets your actual purpose; the taste barely changes as the number climbs, and the price does.
Why these get compared
Because they were, for decades, sold as the same thing. Mānuka and kānuka colonise the same cleared land, flower in overlapping windows, and are worked by the same hives — so mixed and mislabelled crops were not fraud so much as the default outcome. New Zealand's 2018 regulatory definition of mānuka exists largely to force the distinction.

Where the difference is overstated
The health gap. Manuka's non-peroxide activity is a real chemical distinction and it is laboratory activity — there is no clinical evidence that eating manuka does anything kānuka does not. As food, the difference between them is flavour and price.
