Meliponiculture vs beekeeping
Keeping stingless bees and keeping honey bees share a word and very little else. No frames, no spinning, no smoke in the same way, no swarm control, and a harvest measured in litres.
Which to choose
In the tropics, meliponiculture is easier, safer and far less demanding of time — and produces very little honey. Honey bee beekeeping produces a crop and demands disease management, swarm control and a good deal more attention. Many tropical keepers do both, for different reasons.
Why these get compared
People arrive at meliponiculture expecting a smaller version of beekeeping and find that essentially none of the technique transfers. Knowing that in advance saves a colony.

Where the difference is overstated
How hard meliponiculture is. Once the refrigeration step is understood it is genuinely low-maintenance, and its reputation for difficulty comes mostly from people applying honey bee technique to an animal it was not written for.
