The lower box of a hive, containing the brood nest and the colony's own stores.

Definition
Where the queen lays and the colony lives. Its volume matters more than beekeepers once assumed: wild colonies select cavities of around 30 to 40 litres, considerably smaller than many managed brood arrangements, and smaller volumes increase swarming while limiting colony size.
