Propolis: the hive's immune system

Plant resin collected, chewed and plastered through the nest. Its function in the colony is well understood; the health claims made for it in a jar are a separate matter and mostly outrun the evidence.

Where it comes from

Foragers gather sticky resin from leaf buds and bark — poplar above all in temperate Europe and North America, birch and conifer elsewhere, and an entirely different set of species in the tropics. They pack it into the pollen baskets, and nestmates chew it with wax and secretions at the nest.

This matters more than it sounds: propolis is not one substance. Poplar-type propolis from Europe, green propolis from Brazilian Baccharis and red propolis from Cuban and Brazilian Dalbergia have genuinely different chemistry. A study of one says very little about another, which is a large part of why the clinical literature is so hard to summarise.

What it does in the colony

  • Seals cracks and narrows entrances, which is a defensive and thermal measure.
  • Coats internal surfaces, lowering the microbial load in a warm humid box full of stored food.
  • Entombs intruders — a mouse killed inside a hive cannot be carried out, so it is encased and effectively mummified.
  • Contributes to what is sometimes called social immunity: a colony-level defence that supplements individual immune systems.

Colonies given rough internal surfaces build a heavier propolis envelope and show measurably lower expression of some immune genes — the interpretation being that they need less individual immune response because the nest is doing more of the work. That is a genuinely interesting finding about bees.

The evidence boundary

The most-studied application is oral — mouthwash and aphthous ulcer treatment — where some trials report benefit. Even there, the variability of the material makes dosing and replication genuinely difficult, and nothing on this site is medical advice.

Consistently reported and not seriously disputed as a laboratory observation. Activity varies substantially with the botanical origin of the resin.

What this does not claim: Laboratory activity is not clinical efficacy. This is not a claim that propolis treats or prevents any condition in people, and the variability between propolis types means results from one region's material do not transfer to another's.
