How good is a bee's memory?

Good enough to matter. A single pairing of a scent with sugar can produce an association lasting days, repeated training produces memory that persists for most of a forager's remaining life, and the phase structure — short, mid and long term, with consolidation requiring protein synthesis — closely resembles that in vertebrates.
The phases
- Short-term memory forms within seconds of a rewarded pairing and decays in minutes.
- Mid-term memory lasts hours and does not require new protein synthesis.
- Long-term memory requires protein synthesis and several learning trials, and can last weeks — which is most of a summer forager's adult life.
That structure is close enough to the vertebrate pattern that bees are used as a model organism for the molecular basis of memory formation in general, which is a large part of why the field is as well funded as it is.
Sleep and consolidation
Bees sleep, and consolidation depends on it. Sleep-deprived bees consolidate navigational memory worse, and sleep-deprived foragers perform their waggle dances less precisely the following day — giving their nestmates worse directional information. A social cost to poor sleep, in an insect, is among the more striking results in the field.
What bees remember in practice
- Flower colours, shapes, scents and handling techniques, learned over a few visits.
- The time of day a species secretes nectar, so a bee turns up when the flower is worth visiting.
- Landmarks and routes covering several kilometres, and the exact entrance of one hive among many.
