How intelligent are bees?
Short answerIt depends
Bees learn quickly, remember for days, generalise rules to things they have never seen, and learn from watching each other — all with about a million neurons. Whether to call that intelligence is a question about the word. What the experiments show is a specific, impressive and bounded set of abilities, and the popular version routinely overshoots all three.
Why bees can do any of this
Foraging is a hard learning problem. A bee has to find flowers among a great many things that are not flowers, learn which ones pay, handle each species' mechanics, remember where the patch is, get home and communicate it. The cognition is not a curiosity bolted onto a simple animal; it is what the animal is for.
What is well established
- Fast associative learning of colour, pattern and scent, sometimes in a single rewarded trial, retained for days.
- Relational concepts — sameness, difference, above and below — transferred to stimuli the bee has never seen.
- Configural processing: learning an arrangement of features rather than the features alone.
- Social learning: a bee that watches another solve a task solves it faster, and solutions spread through a group.
- Route and landmark memory good enough to navigate kilometres and return to one entrance among many.
