Cork hives
Cylinders of cork bark, used across the western Mediterranean wherever cork oak is worked. Excellent insulation, effectively free where the forestry already exists, and a good illustration of hive design following local material.

Still practised and measurably contracting — fewer practitioners, less territory, or a shorter season than the earlier record describes.
Present in small numbers in heritage and smallholder use in Iberia and North Africa; superseded by frame hives for production. Documented in twentieth-century survey work and regional reporting.
The material decides the hive
Cork oak bark is stripped on a long rotation as a commercial crop, and offcuts and lower-grade sections are unsuitable for stoppers. Formed into a cylinder and closed at the ends, cork makes a hive that is extremely light, an outstanding insulator against both summer heat and winter cold, and rot-resistant.
It is documented across Portugal, Spain, southern France, Italy and North Africa — which is to say, precisely the distribution of the cork oak. That correspondence is the point: the map of traditional hive materials is largely a map of what grows where.
Status
Largely replaced by frame hives in commercial beekeeping. Cork hives survive in small numbers, in heritage and hobby contexts and in some smallholder use, and cork is still used as insulation and as hive-component material in modern designs.
How they are worked
Cork cylinders are used horizontally on stands or upright with a stone or board cover, and worked at one end like every other fixed-comb cylinder. Some are made from a single tube of bark and some from sheets pinned into a cylinder, and lids are frequently cork as well, weighted with a stone against wind.
Because cork is so light, hives can be moved by one person, which suits the transhumant beekeeping the western Mediterranean has long practised. The material and the movement fit together, which is the general pattern: hive design follows both the local material and what the beekeeping year requires.
Where they survive
Surviving cork hives are found in smallholder use, in heritage apiaries and in museum collections across Portugal, Spain and North Africa. Cork is also used in modern hive construction as insulation and as a component material, so the property that made the traditional hive work is still being used in a different form.
What this page does not claim
That cork hives are distinctively ancient. They are documented from the early modern period onwards and the material has been worked far longer, but there is no evidence dating the hive form itself.
