Wax-resist dyeing
Wax drawn or stamped onto cloth so that dye cannot reach it, then removed to leave a pattern. A living industrial demand for beeswax that almost no consumer connects to bees.

Practised commercially and domestically today across several countries, and directly observable. The share of beeswax in the wax used has fallen substantially in favour of paraffin.
How the resist works
Molten wax is applied to cloth — drawn with a spouted tool, stamped with a metal block, or brushed — and allowed to set. The cloth is then dyed, and wherever wax sits the dye cannot penetrate. Boiling or scraping removes the wax and the covered areas emerge in the previous colour. Repeating the sequence with different colours builds up complex designs.
The wax has to do two contradictory things: adhere firmly enough to block dye, and crack in a controlled way where the maker wants the characteristic fine veining. Practitioners blend beeswax with paraffin and with resins to tune exactly that behaviour — beeswax for adhesion and flexibility, harder waxes for crackle.
Where it is done
Indonesian batik is the best-known tradition, with regional styles that differ in motif, palette and technique, and it is produced today both by hand and by stamp at commercial scale. Wax-resist dyeing is also practised in West Africa, in parts of India, in China and in Central Asia, in traditions that are distinct from one another and from batik.
Why paraffin matters here
Cheap paraffin has replaced a substantial share of the beeswax formerly used in resist work, as it has in candles. Beeswax has not been eliminated — its adhesion and flexibility are still valued, particularly in fine hand work — but the volume of the demand has fallen, and with it one of the more reliable non-food markets for wax.
Cultural significance
One of the few surviving large non-food, non-liturgical uses of beeswax, and a craft whose entire visual character — including its crackle — is determined by the physical behaviour of the wax blend.
What this page does not claim
That batik and other resist traditions are one practice, that they use pure beeswax, or that printed 'wax print' cloth is wax-resist. The traditions are distinct, the wax is blended, and the printed cloth involves no resist process.
