Definition
Patented by Lorenzo Langstroth in 1852 and built on his observation of bee space — that bees leave gaps of roughly 6 to 9 mm unbuilt. Frames suspended with that clearance stay free and can be lifted out and returned. Inspection without destruction, disease monitoring and queen management all follow from it.
