Lignotuber
An underground woody swelling from which a plant resprouts after fire.
Botany
Definition
The structure that lets mallee eucalypts persist in country that burns regularly: the above-ground stems are destroyed and the plant regrows from the lignotuber. Mallee is a growth form produced by this habit rather than a species, which is why mallee honey is honestly labelled multifloral.
