Beeswax in Neolithic pottery
The largest single body of evidence for early human use of honey bees is chemical rather than pictorial: a wax signature trapped in the fabric of cooking pots, recovered from thousands of sherds across three continents.
How a pot remembers what was in it
Unglazed pottery is porous. Fats and waxes soak into the clay body during use and, protected from the open air, survive for thousands of years. Extracting them and running them through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry produces a profile of the molecules present, and beeswax leaves a distinctive one: a series of long-chain fatty acids, alkanes and wax esters in a ratio that animal fat and plant waxes do not reproduce.
That specificity is what makes the method worth trusting. It is not an inference from shape or context. It is a chemical fingerprint of a particular material, and it either matches or it does not.
What the survey found
A continent-scale study published in 2015 examined lipid residues from several thousand Neolithic potsherds across Europe, the Near East and North Africa. Beeswax turned up widely, with the earliest secure occurrences in Anatolia in the seventh millennium BCE and a scatter of finds across Neolithic Europe thereafter.
The second finding is the more interesting one. Beeswax residues stop appearing above a certain latitude, and the boundary corresponds closely to the ecological limit of the honey bee at the time. The absence of a signal in the far north is not an absence of evidence: it is evidence of an absence of bees.
What a wax signature does not tell you
The last of those is the one most often forgotten. The map of Neolithic beeswax is partly a map of where residue analysis has been funded, and it will move as more assemblages are tested. It has already moved once.
What people plausibly used it for
- Waterproofing and sealing porous vessels, cordage and containers, which is the use most consistent with finding wax inside pots.
- As an adhesive, mixed with plant resin — a compound attested far earlier in southern Africa on a fibre artefact.
- As food, eaten with the honey and comb rather than separated from it.
- Medicinally, which is well attested in later literate societies and can only be guessed at here.
Why this matters more than the pictures
A painting is one place, one moment and one artist. A residue survey is thousands of sites sampled by the same method, which makes it the only evidence in this subject that can answer a question about distribution rather than about a single event. It is the reason we can say that early farming communities across a very wide area were in routine contact with honey bee products, and say it without needing a single named site to be right.
