High densities of managed honey bees can reduce forage availability for wild bees.
Multiple studies report reduced wild bee visitation and, in several cases, reduced wild bee abundance in the vicinity of dense managed apiaries, particularly in flower-limited landscapes and protected areas. The IPBES assessment identifies competition with managed bees among the pressures on wild pollinators.
What this does not claim: This is not a demonstration that beekeeping causes wild bee population decline at national scale, which has not been established. Effects are landscape-dependent and are likely to be small or absent where forage is abundant. It is also not a claim that honey bees are the principal driver of wild bee decline — habitat loss, agricultural intensification and pesticides are far better supported as the main causes.
