Are honey bees pushing out wild bees?

Short answerMostly true

In some landscapes, yes. Managed honey bee colonies are livestock kept at densities no wild bee reaches, they forage over several kilometres, and there is reasonable evidence they reduce forage available to wild bees and spread pathogens into wild populations. Adding hives is not conservation, and in flower-poor landscapes it can be actively harmful.

Where the belief comes from

The confusion is in the word bee. Colony collapse disorder coverage attached public concern to the one bee people could name, and 'save the bees' campaigns then recommended keeping the species that was never in trouble.

The two mechanisms

  • Competition for forage. A single colony holds tens of thousands of individuals ranging over several kilometres — perhaps 300 square kilometres of potential foraging area. A solitary bee is one animal covering a few hectares. Where forage is limited, the overlap runs almost entirely one way.
  • Pathogen spillover. Viruses associated with managed honey bees, including deformed wing virus, have been detected in wild bumblebees and solitary bees, and shared flowers are a plausible transmission route. Commercially reared bumblebees are a second pathway.

The numbers that frame it

The western honey bee is one of the most widely distributed insects on earth and global managed colony numbers have risen over recent decades. It is not endangered in any sense. Meanwhile many of the roughly 20,000 wild bee species are declining, driven by habitat loss, agricultural intensification and pesticides. Those are two different animals with two different situations, and treating them as one is the commonest error in the subject.

What follows practically

  • Do not keep bees in order to help bees. Keep them because colonies are fascinating and the craft is absorbing — those reasons survive scrutiny.
  • Do not site apiaries in or beside nature reserves and other habitat maintained for wild pollinators.
  • Plant for forage diversity and leave nesting habitat — bare sunny soil, standing dead stems, undisturbed tussocky grass. Those help the bees that are actually in trouble.
  • Support habitat at landscape scale. This problem is not solved in gardens, though gardens genuinely contribute.

Multiple studies report reduced wild bee visitation and, in several cases, reduced wild bee abundance in the vicinity of dense managed apiaries, particularly in flower-limited landscapes and protected areas. The IPBES assessment identifies competition with managed bees among the pressures on wild pollinators.

What this does not claim: This is not a demonstration that beekeeping causes wild bee population decline at national scale, which has not been established. Effects are landscape-dependent and are likely to be small or absent where forage is abundant. It is also not a claim that honey bees are the principal driver of wild bee decline — habitat loss, agricultural intensification and pesticides are far better supported as the main causes.
