Most bees are not honey bees

Around 20,000 bee species exist. Roughly 90% are solitary, almost none make honey, and most of the ones in genuine trouble are not the one on the jar.

The numbers

  • Around 20,000 described bee species worldwide, in seven families.

  • Roughly 90% of all bee species are solitary — one female, one nest, no workers, no caste.
  • About 250 bumblebee species and about 500 stingless bee species make up most of the rest of the social bees.
  • Britain alone has around 270 bee species; the United States has around 4,000. In both cases exactly one is the honey bee.

A solitary bee's whole life is this: emerge, mate, find or dig a nest, provision each cell with pollen and nectar, lay one egg per cell, seal it, and die — usually weeks before the offspring emerge. There is no colony, no honey, no queen, and essentially no stinging, because there are no stores worth defending and a bee that dies defending one cell has lost everything.

Why the confusion causes real harm

This would be pedantry if the two groups were in the same situation. They are not, and the conflation produces advice that is actively counterproductive.

The practical consequence is that installing hives to help bees adds thousands of generalist foragers competing for the same flowers as the wild species already there. In a flower-rich landscape this may matter little. In a city or an intensively farmed area, where forage is the binding constraint, it can make things worse for exactly the bees the gesture was meant to help.

What actually helps

  • Plant flowers rather than keeping hives. Plants add resources; hives add competitors.
  • Cover the whole season, especially the ends — February and October forage is worth far more than another July plant.
  • Provide nest sites. Bare undisturbed sunny soil, hollow stems, dead wood and rough tussocky grass. For many species nest sites limit populations more than flowers do, and nobody plans for them.
  • Include deep tubular flowers for long-tongued bumblebees, which are the group in steepest decline.
  • Mow less. A lawn cut weekly supports almost nothing; the same lawn cut monthly supports clover, self-heal and the bees that use them.
  • Leave the mining bee mounds in the lawn alone. They are harmless, temporary and a sign of a healthy garden.

The western honey bee is not a threatened species, and global managed colony numbers have risen over recent decades.

Consistently reported in international assessments and agricultural statistics. Regional and seasonal colony losses can be severe, and are a separate question from the species' global status.

What this does not claim: This is not a claim that honey bee health is unimportant or that beekeepers face no problems — varroa, forage scarcity and pesticide exposure are real. It is a claim about conservation status, not about welfare or management difficulty.

Established evidence

Many wild pollinator species are in documented decline.

The IPBES assessment found declines in wild pollinator abundance, diversity and range in the regions where long-term data exist, with habitat loss, land-use intensification, pesticides, pathogens, invasive species and climate change as the identified drivers.

What this does not claim: Data coverage is uneven and largely concentrated in Europe and North America. The assessment does not support a single global figure for pollinator decline, and it does not attribute the pattern to one cause.
