Can bees sense magnetic fields?

Bees change their behaviour when the magnetic field around them is altered — in comb-building orientation, in homing and in trained discrimination tasks — and that has been reported repeatedly since the 1970s. How they detect it is not settled. The effect is better supported than any explanation for it.
Where the belief comes from
Popular accounts compress a genuine and repeated behavioural finding into the phrase magnetic compass, which imports a working navigational sense and a known organ. Neither of those follows from a response to a field change.
What has been observed
- Comb-building orientation shifts when the ambient field is altered.
- Homing and dance orientation show effects under artificial field manipulation.
- Bees can be trained to discriminate between the presence and absence of a field anomaly.
- Magnetite-containing structures have been described in the abdomen and proposed as a receptor.
Why the mechanism is not settled
This is a useful case to hold on to. In sensory biology an effect can be robust for decades while its mechanism stays open, and a page that flattens the two is not simplifying, it is asserting something nobody has shown.
