Can sensors and AI monitor hive health?

Partly, and much less than the marketing implies. Hive scales are mature and genuinely useful; acoustic, camera and AI methods are mostly proof-of-concept, and the systematic reviews of the field say so in those terms.

Where the belief comes from

A genuinely useful mature technology — the hive scale — sold alongside a research field whose promising early results are marketed as finished capabilities, in a subject where beekeepers have a real and unmet need for less invasive inspection.

The one that works well

A scale under one reference colony, logging weight continuously, is the mature technology here. The measurement is unambiguous and the interpretation is direct: you can see a nectar flow start and stop, judge whether forage is available, and know when supers are needed without opening anything. It is cheap relative to what it saves and it does not require a model to believe.

Temperature and humidity sensing is useful for broad states — whether brood rearing is under way, how overwintering is going — with finer inference less settled.

The ones that are research

Acoustic and vibration monitoring produces real signals: changes in hive sound have been correlated with queenlessness, swarming preparation and forager activity. Camera systems at entrances can count bees and detect pollen loads. Automated varroa detection reduces the labour of counting in particular rigs.

Why 'monitors hive health' is the wrong phrase

There is no validated general diagnostic. What exists is a set of narrow demonstrated tasks. Asking a vendor which specific task has been independently validated, on how many colonies, over how long, and in what climate is a better question than asking whether the system uses AI — and the answer to the first one is informative.
