Why this page was held until now

HoneyHQ deliberately did not write this subject in an earlier sprint, because the accessible literature was dominated by vendor material and there was no way to separate demonstrated capability from product claims. Two systematic reviews of precision beekeeping have since made that separation possible, and the honest picture they give is more qualified than any product page.

Hive monitoring technologies by what they measure and how well established the interpretation is. 'Maturity' refers to independent field validation, not to commercial availability — several immature methods are on sale.

What the reviews conclude, in their own terms

The practical reading: weight is the measurement to trust and to start with, temperature is useful for broad states, and everything acoustic or visual should be treated as promising and unproven unless a specific validated task is named.

What 'AI hive monitoring' does and does not mean

Machine-learning classifiers are trained on labelled data from particular hives, in particular places, with particular equipment. A model that detects swarming preparation well in one dataset may transfer poorly to a different bee, box, climate or microphone. Reported accuracy is a statement about a test set, not a specification.

None of which makes the field uninteresting. A scale on one reference colony genuinely tells a beekeeper when the flow started, which is real, cheap and useful — and it is a better argument for instrumentation than any claim about artificial intelligence.

What is demonstrated is a set of narrow tasks on particular datasets — weight change, entrance counting, acoustic patterns associated with specific states. Systematic reviews report most work as proof-of-concept with limited generalisability, and no validated general diagnostic exists.

What this does not claim: That none of it works. Hive scales are mature and useful, and specific classifiers perform well on the data they were trained and tested on.
