Bees have internal states that bias their decisions in the way emotions bias ours: shaken bees judge ambiguous stimuli more pessimistically, rewarded bumblebees more optimistically, and the effect depends on dopamine. That is a genuine finding about internal states. It is not evidence that anything is felt, and no method in this field can address that.

Where the belief comes from

The papers use the phrase emotion-like, and the qualifier is doing real work that headlines drop. A judgement-bias experiment is the standard tool of animal welfare science, and it measures how an internal state shifts a decision under uncertainty — not what the animal experiences.

What a judgement-bias experiment does

A bee is trained that one cue means reward and another means no reward, then presented with an ambiguous cue in between. How readily it approaches the ambiguous cue is the measure. Bees agitated by being shaken become more reluctant; bumblebees given an unexpected sugar reward become more willing, and the effect is abolished by blocking dopamine.

The pain question

Bumblebees will accept a noxiously hot feeder in exchange for a higher sugar concentration. That is a motivational trade-off rather than a reflex, and it is one of the criteria used in pain research to distinguish nociception from something more. Nociception — detecting and responding to damaging stimuli — is well established in insects. Pain as an experience is not demonstrable by these methods.

The consciousness argument

A serious scholarly argument holds that the insect central complex performs an integrative function analogous to the vertebrate midbrain, and that this is the kind of structure subjective experience is associated with.
