How do bees carry pollen?

On the outside of the body, and the method varies by species. Honey bees and bumblebees comb pollen out of their branched hairs and pack it into a smooth basket on each hind leg — the bright lumps you can see. Most other bees have no basket at all: they carry loose pollen in dense brushes under the abdomen or on the legs, and a few swallow it. Nectar goes inside; pollen almost never does.

Where the belief comes from

Honey bees are the bee most people have seen closely, and the pollen basket is conspicuous — two orange saddlebags, unmistakable once noticed. It gets generalised to bees in general, which is roughly like assuming every bird has webbed feet because ducks do.

First, why pollen sticks at all

Bee hairs are branched, unlike the smooth hairs of a wasp, and that structure is essentially a pollen trap: grains lodge in the branching and are held. It is the single feature that separates bees from their wasp relatives functionally, and it is why a bee emerging from a flower looks dusted while a wasp does not.

A visiting bee therefore picks up pollen whether or not she is collecting it, which is the whole basis of pollination — the plant is exploiting a delivery system the bee did not build for it.

How a honey bee loads a basket

  1. CollectShe works the flower, and pollen lodges across her branched body hairs — head, thorax, legs, everywhere.
  2. GroomCombs and brushes on the legs rake the pollen forward and downward, gathering it from the body. Much of this happens in flight between flowers, which is why a bee often appears to be fidgeting mid-air.
  3. Moisten and packA little nectar or glandular secretion is added, which is what makes the load cohere into a pellet rather than blowing away. Dampness is why the loads keep their shape.
  4. Press into the corbiculaThe pellet is pressed onto the outer face of each hind tibia, held by the fringe of hairs and a single stout central bristle. Two loads, one per side, balanced.
  5. Unload at the nestShe does not hand pollen to another bee the way she hands over nectar. She pushes the pellets off into a cell herself, and house bees pack them down afterwards.

Why it is not carried like nectar

Nectar is a liquid the colony wants concentrated, so it travels internally where enzymes can start work on it. Pollen is a dry granular solid the colony wants delivered intact as protein, and there is no advantage in swallowing it — so it rides on the outside, in the open air, and is stored in a completely different way when it arrives.

That difference is worth holding onto, because it is the mechanical reason pollen does not become honey. The two cargoes go to different places by different routes and are used for different things: nectar becomes the colony's carbohydrate store, and pollen becomes bee bread, the protein that feeds larvae.

True of honey bees, bumblebees and their close relatives, and false of most bee species. The corbicula belongs to the corbiculate bees; the majority of the roughly twenty thousand species carry pollen dry in a brush of hairs on the legs or under the abdomen, a minority carry it internally in the crop, and cuckoo bees that provision no nest generally have no pollen-carrying structure at all.
