What is lost-wax casting?

You model an object in wax, encase it in clay, heat it so the wax runs out, and pour metal into the space the wax left. The wax is lost, and the metal takes its exact shape including every detail.
Why wax and not something else
Three properties have to coincide: a melting point low enough that the model burns out without damaging the mould, enough firmness at room temperature to hold fine detail from a modelling tool, and clean combustion leaving essentially no residue to spoil the casting. Beeswax has all three, which is why unconnected traditions independently settled on it.
The technique is documented in the ancient Near East, Egypt, South Asia, West Africa — the Ife and Benin bronzes among its most celebrated products — and the pre-Columbian Americas. It has never been superseded, only industrialised: modern investment casting for engineering components is the same process with synthetic waxes.
The connection back to bees
A sculptural tradition needs a wax supply, and a wax supply needs bees — kept or robbed, in quantity. The great bronze traditions imply beekeeping and honey-hunting economies behind them that are studied far less than the objects they made possible.
