Lost-wax casting

Modelling an object in wax, encasing it, melting the wax out and pouring metal into the space it leaves. One of the oldest metalworking techniques, still in use, and responsible for a large share of the world's surviving ancient bronze sculpture.

In current use in craft metalworking and, in industrialised form, in engineering. The living status is straightforwardly observable; the modelling material in modern industrial use is usually synthetic.

What the wax actually does

  1. ModelThe object is modelled in wax, either solid or as a layer over a clay core. Wax is chosen because it takes fine detail from the hand and from tools, and holds it.
  2. InvestThe model is encased in clay or a refractory mixture, with channels left for pouring and venting. The wax is now a void waiting to happen.
  3. Burn outThe mould is heated. The wax melts and runs out — this is the lost wax — leaving a cavity that is an exact negative of the model, including every detail the wax held.
  4. Pour and breakMolten metal fills the cavity. When it has cooled the mould is broken away, which is why each mould yields one casting and why every lost-wax piece is in that sense unique.

The properties that matter are specific: a melting point low enough to burn out cleanly without damaging the mould, enough firmness at room temperature to hold detail, and clean combustion leaving little residue. Beeswax has all three, which is why it was the standard material across so many unconnected traditions.

Where it was done

Lost-wax casting is documented in the ancient Near East, in Egypt, in South Asia, in West Africa — the Ife and Benin bronzes are among its most celebrated products — and in the pre-Columbian Andes and Mesoamerica. It reached those places independently in at least several cases, and it remains in use both in craft production and, in an industrialised form, in modern investment casting for engineering components.

Why it matters for bees

A sculptural tradition requires a wax supply, and a wax supply requires bees — kept, or robbed from wild colonies, in quantity. The great bronze traditions of West Africa and South Asia imply beekeeping or honey hunting economies behind them that are far less studied than the objects they made possible.

The enabling technique behind a substantial share of the world's surviving ancient and medieval metal sculpture, and one of very few technologies to be invented repeatedly and never superseded.

What this page does not claim

That every lost-wax tradition used beeswax, or that any particular object was modelled in it. Other waxes, resins and tallow are attested, modern industry uses synthetics, and material attribution for an individual piece requires analysis.
