Clay and pottery hives
Horizontal cylinders of fired or unfired clay, stacked in rows and worked from the rear. The best-evidenced ancient hive on earth, for one reason: it is the only material that survives, so the archaeological record of hives is really the record of this design.

Still practised and measurably contracting — fewer practitioners, less territory, or a shorter season than the earlier record describes.
Still in traditional use in parts of North Africa and the Middle East, and largely replaced by frame hives elsewhere. Reported in twentieth-century survey work and in continuing regional documentation.
The design and why it suits the place
A cylinder roughly eighty centimetres long and thirty across, with a small flight hole at one end and a removable lid at the other. The beekeeper works from the back while the bees come and go at the front, which allows honey to be cut from the rear while brood sits nearer the entrance.
Thick clay walls buffer temperature swings that would cook a colony in a thin wooden box in a hot dry climate, and the cylinders stack, so a large apiary occupies a small footprint. That combination is why the design persisted for three thousand years and why the Tel Rehov installation could hold on the order of a hundred colonies inside a town.
Where and when
- Egypt, depicted in a Fifth Dynasty relief being tended, decanted and sealed, and still in use along the Nile within living memory.
- The Levant, excavated at Tel Rehov as an industrial apiary of the Iron Age.
- Greece and the classical Mediterranean, as combed-interior ceramic hives with extension rings.
- North Africa, the Middle East and Iran, in continuing traditional use.
Making and stacking
Cylinders are formed from clay tempered with straw or dung, dried or fired, and closed at the rear with a plug of clay, wood or stone that is broken and remade at each harvest. They are stacked in rows several high, bedded on mud, with entrances all facing the same way.
A large apiary of stacked cylinders occupies very little ground for the number of colonies it holds, which is what allowed an installation like Tel Rehov to sit inside a dense town rather than outside it.
What this page does not claim
That clay hives were the first hives, or the commonest. They are the earliest that survive and the best documented, and both of those are statements about materials and climate rather than about the history of beekeeping.
