The honey bee of the Nile valley, and the subspecies depicted in the oldest images of beekeeping anywhere — the Fifth Dynasty reliefs at Abu Ghurab from around 2400 BCE show this bee being smoked, extracted and jarred. It is small, yellow, nervous and superbly adapted to desert heat, and it has been progressively displaced within Egypt by imported Italian stock.

Can it sting?

Nervous and defensive, running on the comb and quick to take flight, though the sting itself is unremarkable. Egyptian beekeepers describe it as difficult to work compared with imported stock, which is a substantial part of why it has been displaced.

How to recognise it

Small, slender and distinctly yellow with narrow abdominal bands and, characteristically, pale hair on the abdomen giving a slightly frosted appearance. Noticeably smaller than European subspecies.

Traditionally kept in horizontal cylinders of unfired clay or mud, stacked in rows — a design that lets a beekeeper smoke the bees forward and take honeycomb from the rear without destroying the brood nest. That is non-destructive harvest, achieved three thousand years before the movable frame.

Habitat
The Nile valley and delta — irrigated agriculture, orchard, desert margin and oasis.
Distribution
Egypt and Sudan, and historically across the Nile system. Now heavily hybridised with imported Apis mellifera ligustica.
Behaviour
Small, nervous, heat-tolerant and highly mobile. It stores relatively little and swarms and absconds readily, which is a rational strategy in a landscape where forage moves with irrigation and the flood.
Pollination role
The historical pollinator of Egyptian agriculture, now largely working alongside or replaced by imported stock.

High, and increasingly displaced by imported subspecies in commercial contexts.

What it forages on
Nile valley crops and desert-margin flora — clover, citrus, cotton, and irrigated vegetables.

Stores a harvestable surplus

Modest yields by European standards, reflecting small colonies and a readiness to abscond. Egyptian honey production has historically been substantial nonetheless, and clover honey is the principal product.

Relationship with people

How people interact with it
The bee of the oldest documented beekeeping anywhere. Egyptian records name beekeeping as a profession, honey appears in tax and temple accounts, and tomb scenes show hives being moved by boat along the Nile — migratory beekeeping four thousand years ago. The bee hieroglyph formed half of the pharaoh's title for three millennia.
Conservation
Genuinely at risk as a distinct subspecies through introgression rather than population loss. Imported Italian queens have hybridised Egyptian stock extensively, and conservation efforts focus on isolated populations in Upper Egypt and the oases.
