Practised today by artists working in the medium, after a long gap. That is revival from documentary and analytical evidence, not an unbroken tradition, and the record says which.

Paint that sets by cooling

In encaustic, pigment is mixed into molten beeswax, often with a resin, and applied hot. It sets as it cools rather than by drying or oxidising, which means the paint film is finished the moment it is cold and can be reworked indefinitely by warming it again.

The consequences for survival are large. Wax does not yellow with age as oil binders do, it does not become brittle in the same way, and it is chemically stable and water-resistant. Encaustic paintings from the Roman period survive with their colour largely intact, which almost nothing else from that date does.

The Fayum portraits

The best-known encaustic works are the mummy portraits from Roman Egypt — panel paintings of individuals, placed over the faces of mummified bodies. They combine a Roman portrait convention with an Egyptian funerary practice, and they are the largest surviving body of ancient panel painting anywhere.

Their preservation is a joint product of the technique and the climate: wax as a stable binder, and a dry burial environment. Neither alone would have been enough, which is worth stating because the portraits are frequently offered as evidence of the medium's durability without the second half.

Other wax art, and the revival

Wax modelling, votive figures and anatomical models form a separate tradition with its own long history, running from ancient votives through the extraordinary anatomical waxes of eighteenth-century Italy. Encaustic itself was largely abandoned after antiquity and revived by twentieth-century artists, which is reinvention from documentary and analytical evidence rather than continuous transmission.

The reason for the long gap is practical rather than aesthetic. Encaustic demands heated tools and a continuous working temperature, which makes it slow and awkward beside egg tempera and later oil, both of which could be worked cold and at leisure. Wax lost on convenience rather than on quality, and the paintings that survive are the argument that it never lost on durability.

Cultural significance

The reason a large body of ancient portrait painting exists at all, and one of the clearest cases of a material property — a stable, non-yellowing binder — determining what survives from a period.

What this page does not claim

That wax alone accounts for the portraits' preservation, or that modern encaustic continues an unbroken practice. The dry Egyptian burial environment did at least as much work as the binder, and the technique was revived rather than inherited.
