Fixed-comb hives
The category almost every traditional hive belongs to: the bees attach comb directly to the container, so it cannot be lifted out. That single fact determines how the hive is harvested, whether it can be inspected, and why harvesting was destructive for most of history.

Fixed-comb hives remain the majority of hives in use worldwide by number, principally in Africa and parts of Asia, and are reported as such in current development and industry literature.
What fixed comb means in practice
Bees build comb attached to whatever is above them. In a hollow log, a clay cylinder, a coiled straw skep or a gourd, that means the comb is welded to the inside of the container. It cannot be removed and replaced, which means the colony cannot be inspected, the brood cannot be assessed, and the honey cannot be taken without cutting.
Everything that looks primitive about traditional beekeeping follows from this and not from ignorance. Judging a colony by weight, by sound and by entrance activity is a skill developed because there was no alternative, and the skilled traditional beekeeper knew more about a hive from outside it than most modern beekeepers do.
Working with it
- Harvest by cutting comb from one end, which in a horizontal hive can leave brood untouched at the other.
- Harvest by killing the colony, which was standard European skep practice and gave the whole comb at once.
- Harvest by driving: knocking the bees up into an empty container so the comb can be taken and the colony survives. More skilled and less common.
- Judging a colony by weight, sound, entrance traffic and smell rather than by opening it.
Why so much of the world still uses them
A fixed-comb hive costs nothing but labour, is made from local material, needs no foundation, no frames and no extractor, and can be replaced immediately if it is damaged or robbed. For a smallholder with a local absconding bee and a local honey market, that is frequently the better economics.
The case against is disease management. Where inspection is a legal or practical requirement, a hive whose comb cannot be lifted is a problem, and that rather than yield is what ended fixed-comb beekeeping in the countries that ended it.
What this page does not claim
That fixed-comb beekeeping is inferior. It is cheaper, locally made, needs no imported foundation and suits absconding tropical bees that do poorly in frame hives. What it cannot do is routine inspection, which matters most where disease management is required.
