Miombo woodland beekeeping
Hanging bark cylinders in the miombo woodlands of south-central Africa, in numbers, and selling the honey and wax into a trade that has run for well over a century. One of the largest traditional beekeeping economies anywhere.

The largest woodland in Africa, worked with bark
Miombo woodland runs east to west from Mozambique to Angola and north to south from the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo into Zimbabwe. It is the largest forest type on the continent, and across much of it beekeeping means bark hives: cylinders cut from the bark of large woodland trees, sealed with bark discs at each end and daubed with mud and dung.
Published description of the north-western Zambian system gives hives in the range of sixty to a hundred and twenty centimetres long and twenty to thirty-five centimetres across, cut from Brachystegia, Pterocarpus and Afzelia. A keeper does not have one or two. Hives are made in quantity, hung high in trees across a working area, and visited seasonally.
An export trade, not a subsistence remnant
This is a cash system. Commercial beekeeping in the region is conventionally dated to Portuguese traders coming from Angola in search of beeswax in the 1890s, and wax rather than honey was the export that first gave the practice a market. That inversion — the wax worth more than the honey — recurs across several unrelated traditions and is the reason wax rendering is a skill in its own right.
Modern volumes are substantial. The north-western Zambian system has been reported yielding thousands of tonnes of honey in a season, and studies of the trade treat beekeeping as a significant rural livelihood rather than as a marginal activity, with a dependable buyer relationship being the variable that most changes what a household earns from it.
The argument about the trees
Bark hives require bark, and bark comes off living trees. Whether the practice damages the woodland it depends on is a real question with published work on both sides, including field study in the Niassa reserve in Mozambique examining the effect on tree populations. The answer is not uniform: it depends on species, on how much bark is taken and on how many hives a keeper makes.
Cultural significance
For many rural households in the region beekeeping is a principal source of cash rather than a supplement, which makes the woodland an income-bearing asset and gives keepers a direct interest in it standing.
Pressures and conservation
Bark harvesting for hives, and the felling of large trees for other purposes, both bear on the same woodland. The published work on the effect of bark hives on tree populations reaches different conclusions in different settings and should not be summarised as a single verdict.
What this page does not claim
That this is an ancient practice, that it is uniform across the miombo belt, or that bark hive making is either harmless or destructive as a general fact. The commercial record begins in the 1890s; the age of the practice behind it is not established here.
