Rafter beekeeping in the Mekong delta
Angled poles set in melaleuca forest in southern Vietnam, inviting giant honey bees to build where they can be worked. The same solution as tikung, arrived at in a different forest with a different tree.

The rafter
A pole is cut and set at an angle in melaleuca forest, supported so that it presents a sheltered underside at a workable height. Apis dorsata swarms build their combs on it. The beekeeper chooses the site, the angle and the shade, and those choices determine whether a colony settles.
The skill is in site selection rather than in handling bees: which part of the forest, how much light, how close to water, what aspect. That knowledge is the tradition, and it is what does not transfer when somebody copies the pole.
The forest it depends on
Melaleuca forest in the Mekong delta is a managed landscape with a long history of drainage, fire management and conversion to agriculture and aquaculture. Rafter beekeeping depends on it, and the practice contracts with it. Honey from the system is sold locally and regionally, and the wax is rendered.
Harvest and yield
Combs on a rafter are harvested by smoking and cutting the honey portion, leaving brood where possible so the colony continues. Yields per rafter are modest and the number of rafters a household maintains is what determines the harvest, which is the same arithmetic as tikung and as hung hives in Africa.
Honey and wax both enter local markets. The system also produces a distinctive melaleuca-based honey, and the forest it depends on is managed for timber and for fire control as well as for bees.
Pressures and conservation
Melaleuca forest has contracted substantially through drainage and conversion, and the practice depends on what remains.
What this page does not claim
That the bees are managed in any sense beyond site provision. Colony reproduction, migration and behaviour are entirely wild, and a rafter that no swarm chooses stays empty.
