Smoking a colony
The one technique that appears in every documented harvesting tradition on earth, and in the earliest depictions. It works by interfering with alarm communication and by making bees gorge, and both effects were understood thousands of years after the practice was universal.

In continuous current use worldwide, in traditional harvesting and in commercial beekeeping alike. Among the least uncertain status assignments in this catalogue.
What smoke does
Two effects, both measurable. Smoke interferes with the alarm pheromone signal that marks a target and recruits defenders, so a colony that would otherwise escalate does not. And it prompts bees to gorge on stored honey, which makes an individual measurably slower to sting.
The common explanation — that bees respond to smoke as if to a forest fire and prepare to abscond — is a plausible story that the evidence does not require. The pheromone masking and the gorging are enough to account for the effect, and the fire narrative is an interpretation laid over them.
How it is delivered
- A smouldering bundle of leaves, bark or dung carried in the hand or wedged into a cleft. The oldest form and still the commonest worldwide.
- A burning brand lowered or dropped past a cliff nest, which also draws bees away from the comb as embers fall.
- A fire lit below a nest tree so the smoke rises through it.
- The bellows smoker: a nineteenth-century device that made directed, sustained, one-handed smoking possible and with it routine hive inspection.
Fuel choice is not arbitrary. Traditions select material that smoulders rather than flames and produces cool, dense smoke — rotten wood, dried dung, hessian, pine needles, particular leaves — because hot smoke drives bees onto the comb rather than off it and can scorch brood.
What its universality does and does not show
Smoke appears in the earliest images of honey collection and in every living tradition documented anywhere. That is convergence on an obvious solution by people with no contact, not evidence of a shared origin or of transmission, and it cannot be dated: fire leaves no trace that distinguishes a harvest from a hearth.
What this page does not claim
That smoke calms bees, in the sense of a sedative effect. It disrupts a signal and provokes feeding, which produces less defensive behaviour by a different route. Nor does its presence everywhere indicate a shared origin: it is independent convergence on an obvious solution.
