Wall hives
A cavity built into the wall of a house during construction, with a flight hole outside and an access panel indoors. Common across the Himalaya, parts of the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and still occupied in older buildings.

Still practised and measurably contracting — fewer practitioners, less territory, or a shorter season than the earlier record describes.
Occupied hives remain in older buildings and are documented in current regional apicultural reporting. New wall hives are rarely built, because the building style that accommodates them is being replaced.
Bees in the building
The hive is a void left in a thick masonry or mud wall, sized for a colony, with a small entrance on the outside face and a removable stone, board or plastered panel on the inside. The beekeeper works the colony from inside the house, in shelter, without climbing anything.
It is the warmest hive form there is: the wall is heated by the building and insulated by its own thickness, which matters a great deal in Himalayan winters. It also puts the colony where nothing can rob it — bears, honey badgers and thieves all being real considerations elsewhere.
Where it is found
Documented across the Himalaya for Apis cerana — in Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and adjacent areas — and in parts of Yemen, Oman and the Mediterranean for Apis mellifera. It is a design that requires the house and the hive to be planned together, which is why it belongs to traditions of thick-walled vernacular building.
Working a hive from indoors
The access panel is opened from inside the house, which changes the working conditions completely: no ladder, no weather, no need to carry equipment to the colony. In cold regions that also means the beekeeper can work in months when nobody would open a hive outdoors.
The trade-off is that the colony is in the fabric of the building. Comb attached to masonry cannot be removed, a colony that dies leaves stores in the wall that attract wax moth and robbing, and an abandoned cavity in an old house is a recurring nuisance for whoever inherits it.
What this page does not claim
That the form has a single origin or a datable age. Building a cavity into a thick wall is an obvious thing to do wherever thick walls and cavity-nesting bees coexist, and the recurrence across unconnected regions is convergence.
