Wax seals and sealing
Wax pressed with a matrix to authenticate a document or close a container — an authentication technology that worked because breaking it was obvious and forging it was hard.

Wax document sealing as an authentication system is finished. Ceremonial and decorative sealing continues, usually with resin-based compounds rather than beeswax.
Authentication before signatures
In societies where few people wrote, a seal did what a signature does now. A matrix — a carved die held by a person, office or institution — was pressed into soft wax attached to a document. The impression identified the authority, and any attempt to open and reclose the document destroyed it visibly. Both properties matter: identification and tamper-evidence.
Beeswax works for this because it is plastic when warm, holds fine detail, sets firm and does not crumble. The same properties that make it good for casting make it good for sealing, which is why the two uses recur together.
An administrative industry
Medieval European chanceries consumed wax on an institutional scale, and seals survive in enormous numbers in archives, attached to charters and letters. They are among the best-preserved wax objects anywhere, and they are studied as evidence for institutions, iconography and administrative practice rather than for wax.
The same idea appears far beyond documents. Wax closed the mouths of jars and amphorae, sealed thread and stoppers, and secured containers whose contents someone had an interest in not being interfered with. A sealed amphora and a sealed charter solve the same problem with the same material: proving that nobody has been in since the person holding the matrix closed it.
Seals also carried information beyond identity. Size, colour, the method of attachment, and whether the seal hung on a cord or was pressed directly onto the parchment all signalled the type of document and the weight of the authority behind it — conventions that were legible to people who could not read the text at all.
Cultural significance
A tamper-evident authentication technology that held together legal and administrative life across centuries, and one of the few large uses of beeswax to leave abundant physical evidence.
What this page does not claim
That modern sealing wax is beeswax, or that all historical seals were pure beeswax. Later sealing wax is a shellac and resin compound, and medieval seal wax was commonly blended with resin and pigment.
