Scout bee
A forager that searches for new forage or new nest sites rather than exploiting known ones.
Bees
Definition
A minority of foragers search rather than return to known patches. Scouts show consistently higher novelty-seeking than their nestmates, with correlated differences in brain gene expression. When a swarm needs a home, scouts assess candidate cavities independently and advertise them by dancing.
