Honey compared with sugar

Honey is a free sugar. Everything else about the comparison is real but small, and the gap between 'better' and 'good for you' is where most of the confusion lives.

The short version

Honey and table sugar are both free sugars, and the WHO classifies them together for exactly that reason. Guidance to reduce free sugar intake applies to honey identically. Substituting one for the other is a flavour and texture decision; it is not a health intervention, and treating it as one is the commonest mistake in this area.

What is genuinely true in honey's favour

  • It is less energy-dense by weight, because roughly a fifth of it is water. Per teaspoon the position reverses, since honey is denser — which is a good illustration of how the same fact can be presented either way.
  • It is sweeter by weight, so a recipe converted to honey needs less of it. That is a real reduction, and it is small.
  • Some honeys have a lower glycaemic index than sucrose, driven by their fructose share. The range across honeys is wide enough that the average is not very useful, and acacia sits considerably lower than a high-glucose honey like rapeseed.
  • It contains trace minerals, amino acids and phenolic compounds that sugar does not. Dark honeys have measurably more. In the quantity anyone eats, the nutritional contribution is negligible — this is a real compositional difference with no meaningful dietary consequence.
  • It tastes of something. This is the honest reason to prefer honey, and it is a good one.

Where the argument is usually overstated

The same applies to the mineral content. Honey contains potassium, calcium and traces of others. The amounts are so far below dietary relevance at any realistic intake that listing them is a marketing exercise rather than a nutritional one.

The honest summary

If you use honey instead of sugar, you will consume marginally less sweetener by weight, get a small quantity of compounds that sugar lacks, and eat something with far more flavour. Those are real. They do not make honey a health food, and dietary guidance on free sugars applies to it in full. Enjoy it for what it tastes like, not for what it is supposed to do.

Honey is a meaningful dietary source of antioxidants.

Honey does contain phenolic compounds, and dark honeys measure higher on antioxidant assays than pale ones. At realistic intakes the contribution is negligible, and obtaining a meaningful quantity would require eating an unreasonable amount of sugar. The laboratory measurement is genuine; the dietary claim built on it is not.

What this does not claim: This does not dispute that the compounds are present or that the assay results are real. It disputes the step from assay to diet.
