Stingless bees
A group rather than a single species — Around 500 species in some 60 genera, throughout the tropics — the largest group of eusocial bees after the honey bees. General statements below are statements about the group.
The other honey-making bees, and the only serious rival to Apis for that title. Stingless bees are tropical, perennial and genuinely eusocial, and they store honey in clusters of egg-shaped wax-and-resin pots rather than in hexagonal comb. Their honey is different enough from Apis honey — wetter, more acidic, sharper, prone to fermenting — that several countries have had to write separate standards for it. They have been kept by people in Mesoamerica, Australia, Africa and South-East Asia for thousands of years, in traditions entirely independent of European beekeeping.
Can it sting?
The sting is vestigial and non-functional — the name is literal. Defence is by biting, and some species bite persistently, crawl into hair and ears, or apply caustic resin. They are not defenceless; they are simply not able to sting. This is what has made them the practical choice for keeping bees close to houses and children across the tropics.
How to recognise it
Mostly small, many only 3-6 mm, though Melipona species reach honey bee size. Usually dark, sometimes metallic or yellow-marked, and generally rather ant-like or fly-like to an unaccustomed eye. Wings are often held flat over the back.
- Very small and dark, at a nest entrance made of resin or wax rather than a simple hole.
- Nest entrances are often elaborate — a projecting resin tube or a decorated funnel, sometimes guarded by workers hovering in front of it.
- No functional sting. Defence is by biting, and in some species by smearing resin.

Overlapping generations, division of labour, and a colony that persists through winter as a cluster. Honey bees, and the reason they store honey at all.

Nests inside hollow trees, wall cavities, termite mounds and the ground, built from cerumen — a mixture of wax and plant resin — rather than pure wax. Brood is raised in a separate structure from the food stores, which are held in clusters of rounded pots. This division is what makes stingless-bee honey harvestable without destroying the brood, given the right hive design.

Lifecycle
- Colony foundingNew colonies are founded by swarming, but unlike honey bees the process is gradual: workers provision a new site over days or weeks before a virgin queen moves in, and the daughter colony remains connected to the mother nest for a time. The parent colony is not abandoned.
- Brood provisioningCells are mass-provisioned — filled with food, an egg laid, and sealed — rather than progressively fed as honey bee larvae are. The workers never interact with the growing larva again.
Where it lives and what it does
- Habitat
- Tropical and subtropical forest, savanna, plantations, farmland and cities, wherever there are cavities and year-round flowers.
- Distribution
- Throughout the tropics — Central and South America, Africa, South and South-East Asia, and northern Australia. Absent from Europe entirely, which is why they are so unfamiliar to most English-language readers.
- Behaviour
- Recruitment is by scent trails and by physical guidance rather than by a waggle dance: foragers of some species lay droplets of scent between the nest and the food, and others lead nestmates directly. Colonies build precise defensive architecture, and some species are aggressive competitors that dominate flowers by force. A few are cleptobiotic, robbing other colonies' stores rather than foraging.
- Pollination role
- Major pollinators throughout the tropics, and irreplaceable for a number of crops and wild plants. Their small size lets them enter flowers honey bees cannot; many species buzz-pollinate. Coffee, macadamia, avocado, mango, chayote and a long list of forest trees benefit substantially, and several tropical plants are pollinated by essentially nothing else.
Honey
Stores a harvestable surplus
Genuinely different from Apis honey, and not by a small margin. Stingless bee honey is typically 25-30% water against 16-18% for Apis honey, which makes it thin, pourable and liable to ferment unless refrigerated or dehydrated. It is markedly more acidic and often distinctly sour, sometimes with a fruity or citrus tang. Yields are tiny — perhaps a few hundred grams to a couple of kilograms per colony per year against 20-40 kg from a honey bee colony — which is why it commands very high prices in Brazil, Mexico and Australia. Codex and EU honey standards were written around Apis honey and do not accommodate it, so producing countries have had to develop their own.

- How people interact with it
- Meliponiculture is ancient and continuous. The Maya kept Melipona beecheii in hollow log hives for well over a thousand years, in a practice with its own deities, rituals and calendar, and it survives in Yucatán today. Australian Aboriginal peoples harvested sugarbag from Tetragonula nests across the north of the continent. In Brazil, Mexico and Australia stingless beekeeping is now growing rapidly, driven by the honey's price and by the fact that the bees can be kept safely in a suburban garden.
- Management
- Kept in log hives and in modern box designs that separate the brood from the honey pots and allow harvesting without destroying the nest. Colonies are propagated by splitting rather than bought as packages.
- Conservation
- Under real pressure from deforestation, since most species need large old hollow trees, and from the destructive harvesting of wild nests. Several species are threatened, and the traditional Maya keeping of Melipona beecheii has declined sharply in living memory.
