Where the belief comes from

A substance with real pharmacological activity, a genuine documented tradition in European and East Asian practice, and an established mainstream medical use for an entirely different purpose — three true things that together make an unsupported claim sound reasonable.

What bee venom actually is

Genuinely pharmacologically active. It contains melittin, phospholipase A2 and other components, and it produces real physiological effects. That is precisely why the marketing is persuasive: this is not an inert substance, and the argument that it must therefore do something beneficial is easy to make and does not follow.

What the evidence shows

Repeated uneventful exposure does not confer safety and may sensitise, so a history of tolerating stings is not reassurance. This is not a theoretical hazard attached to an otherwise harmless practice.

The thing it is confused with

Venom immunotherapy is a different matter entirely: an established medical treatment for people with severe allergy to bee stings, delivered under medical supervision with escalating controlled doses, for the specific purpose of reducing the risk of a future sting reaction. It is not apitherapy, it does not treat arthritis, and conflating the two lends the marketing a legitimacy it has not earned.
