The other hive products: beeswax, propolis, royal jelly and bee pollen

Four substances a colony makes or collects besides honey, each with a real biological function and a marketing story that runs well ahead of it. Here is what each one actually is.

Beeswax

Secreted as translucent flakes from glands on the underside of a worker bee's abdomen, between roughly twelve and eighteen days of age. The bees chew and warm the flakes and build them into comb. It is metabolically expensive to make — the often-quoted figure is that producing a kilogram of wax costs the colony several kilograms of honey — which is why bees reuse existing comb wherever they can and why comb honey costs more.

Chemically it is a mixture of long-chain esters, fatty acids and hydrocarbons with a melting point around 62-65 °C. It is edible and indigestible, and its established uses are physical rather than nutritional: candles, wood and leather finishes, cosmetics, food coatings and — historically and enormously — lost-wax casting, which is one of the reasons beekeeping mattered so much before electric light.

Propolis

Not produced by bees but collected: propolis is plant resin, gathered mainly from buds and wounded bark, mixed with wax and enzymes and used as the hive's building material and sealant. Bees fill gaps with it, smooth rough surfaces, varnish the interior of the cavity, and narrow the entrance against draughts and intruders. Composition varies enormously with the local flora, which is a genuine problem for research: propolis from Brazil, from Europe and from New Zealand are chemically different substances sharing a name.

Its most striking use is embalming. A colony that kills an intruder too large to carry out — a mouse, most famously — encases the body in propolis, which prevents decomposition inside the nest. That is a real and observable antimicrobial effect operating in a sealed cavity, and it is the biological fact underneath the health marketing.

Royal jelly

A protein-rich secretion from the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of young worker bees, fed to all larvae for their first few days and to queen larvae throughout development. The difference in diet is what makes a queen: a female larva fed royal jelly continuously develops ovaries, grows larger, lives for years rather than weeks and lays eggs. That is a genuinely remarkable case of diet determining developmental fate, and the mechanism involves both what royal jelly contains and what a worker diet lacks.

The marketing leap — that a substance which makes a bee larva into a queen will do something comparable for an adult human — does not follow from any of this. Human physiology has no equivalent developmental switch, the proteins are digested like any other protein, and clinical evidence for the commonly advertised benefits is weak. Royal jelly is also a documented cause of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, particularly in people with asthma or existing allergies.

Bee pollen and bee bread

Bee pollen is flower pollen packed into pellets with nectar and glandular secretions, carried home on the hind legs and collected by beekeepers using a trap at the hive entrance that scrapes some of it off. It is the colony's protein source — nectar supplies carbohydrate and pollen supplies everything else, which is why pollen availability rather than nectar usually limits brood rearing.

Bee bread is the next stage: pollen packed into cells, mixed with honey and enzymes and lacto-fermented, which preserves it and makes it more digestible. It is what the bees actually eat, as opposed to what they collect.

The pattern across all four

Each of these substances does something real and specific inside a colony — waterproof structure, antimicrobial sealant, developmental trigger, protein supply. In each case the marketing takes that genuine biological function and transplants it into human physiology, where it does not straightforwardly apply. And in three cases out of four, the substance is a documented allergen, which is a risk that rarely appears alongside the benefits on the packaging.

Propolis shows consistent antimicrobial activity in laboratory testing, which is what its function in the hive would predict — it is the substance a colony uses to sterilise its cavity and encase intruders it cannot remove. Composition varies enormously with the source flora.

What this does not claim: This is not evidence that taking propolis orally treats or prevents infection in people. Clinical evidence is limited and hard to interpret, because propolis from different regions is chemically different material sold under one name. Propolis is also a recognised contact allergen.
