The decline of Yucatán meliponiculture
One of the few cases anywhere in which the ending of a cultural practice has been measured rather than described. Colony counts across the Yucatán peninsula, repeated decades apart, document a steep fall — and give the reasons.

Lapsed and deliberately restarted. Not the same thing as continuous practice, and the difference is recorded rather than smoothed over.
The traditional practice is in documented decline; organised revival is documented and current. Both statements are supported by recent survey and project reporting.
What was counted
Surveys of meliponaries across the peninsula, carried out at intervals over recent decades, recorded the number of keepers and the number of managed Melipona beecheii colonies. The comparison shows a steep reduction in both, with abandoned racks and empty jobones recorded alongside working ones.
That is unusual and valuable. Most claims that a tradition is dying rest on impression, an ageing informant or a single visit. Here the same thing was counted twice.
The causes, and how they interact
The arrival of Africanised honey bees offered a far larger honey crop for cash, drawing labour and attention away. Forest clearance removed both forage and the hollow trees from which new colonies and new hives come. Younger people left for wage work. And because meliponine colonies multiply slowly, a decline cannot be reversed quickly even where the will exists.
Revival
University programmes, cooperatives, conservation projects and a market for high-priced meliponine honey have all been directed at reversing it. Some of that is continuation of family practice with new support; some is genuinely new keepers learning from institutions rather than from parents. Both are real, and this site records them as different things.
What a colony count cannot tell you
The surveys count managed colonies and keepers. They do not count the knowledge: which flowering signals a harvest, how to judge a colony through a closed log, how to cut a disc that seals without cerumen, which ceremonies accompany the increase of the hives. That is held by people rather than by hives, and it goes first and returns slowest.
Nor do the counts speak to wild populations. Melipona beecheii nests in tree hollows, and forest clearance reduces both the wild colonies and the supply of new ones for keepers. A decline in managed colonies and a decline in wild ones are separate measurements, and only the first has been made repeatedly.
Pressures and conservation
Recovery is structurally slow because colonies cannot be multiplied quickly, so the rate at which the practice can be rebuilt is set by the biology rather than by demand.
What this page does not claim
That Africanised bees are the sole cause. Land-use change, labour migration and market structure all contribute, and disentangling their relative weight is not something the colony counts alone can do.
