Meliponiculture: keeping stingless bees
The oldest managed beekeeping in the Americas, and a practice that is expanding fast in Southeast Asia. It looks almost nothing like keeping honey bees.
An older tradition than the hive
Maya stingless beekeeping is documented in the Madrid Codex and was a substantial organised activity before European contact, with Melipona beecheii — xunan kab, the royal lady — kept in hollow log hives sealed at both ends. It survived the arrival of Apis mellifera, though the number of managed colonies has fallen sharply within living memory as cheaper Apis honey displaced it.
The Brazilian and Australian traditions are equally old in indigenous terms and have been substantially modernised in the last few decades — standardised boxes, colony division protocols, and in Malaysia and Thailand a genuinely industrial kelulut sector built almost from nothing since the 2000s.
How a colony is managed
- HousingHollow logs traditionally; now more often a modular wooden box with separate brood and honey-pot compartments, which lets honey be taken without cutting into the brood.
- Propagation by divisionA colony is split by moving brood combs and a queen cell into a new box. Because these bees reproduce by budding rather than swarming, division mirrors what they do naturally and takes reliably.
- HarvestHoney pots are opened individually or drawn with a syringe or vacuum. There is no spinning, because there are no frames of comb — the honey is in discrete sealed pots.
- Immediate stabilisationRefrigeration, or dehumidification without heat, within hours. This is the step that separates a good product from a fermenting one.
Why the yields are so small
A strong Melipona colony gives perhaps three to six litres a year. A honey bee colony in a good season gives fifty kilograms. The difference is colony size, foraging radius and the simple fact that these bees store what they need for a lean season rather than a temperate winter — there is no evolutionary reason for a tropical bee to accumulate a large surplus.
That arithmetic, rather than any marketing, is why stingless bee honey costs several times what Apis honey does. It is also why the category attracts adulteration: the premium is large and the genuine supply is small.
Why it is promoted beyond the honey
- Pollination. Several species buzz-pollinate, which honey bees cannot, and short foraging ranges suit diverse smallholdings.
- Conservation. Managed boxes substitute for the large hollow trees and undisturbed termite mounds that land clearance is removing.
- Safety. Colonies can be kept in a school yard or a suburban garden in a way Africanized honey bees in the same landscape cannot.
- Income. In Brazil, Mexico and Malaysia, meliponiculture is promoted specifically as a smallholder income that does not require clearing land.
