Maya meliponiculture
Keeping Melipona beecheii in hollow-log hives across the Yucatán peninsula: a fully documented pre-Columbian apiculture with its own hive, its own ceremonies and its own colonial tribute record, now reduced to a fraction of the colonies recorded two generations ago.

Still practised and measurably contracting — fewer practitioners, less territory, or a shorter season than the earlier record describes.
Practised and steeply reduced. Repeated colony surveys decades apart document the fall directly, and revival projects are separately documented; both are current.
The system
A jobón is a hollowed log section, closed at each end with a disc of stone or wood sealed with clay or cerumen, with a small entrance in the side. Colonies are kept in racks under a shelter — a meliponario — stacked horizontally in rows, near the house rather than in the forest.
Harvest is by opening one end and drawing off honey pots, which is why the horizontal log with removable ends is the right design: the pots sit in a distinct part of the nest from the brood, so the colony can be harvested without being destroyed. Yields are small and the honey is valued accordingly.

The decline, and its causes
- The arrival of Africanised honey bees, offering a far larger cash honey crop from a bee that needs different equipment and different skills.
- Land-use change removing the forest that supplies both forage and the hollow trees new colonies come from.
- Generational transfer failure: the knowledge is held by older keepers and the economics do not attract younger ones.
- Slow colony multiplication, which makes recovery from a decline structurally difficult.
Colony counts in the peninsula have been documented falling steeply over recent decades. That is one of the clearest measured cases anywhere of a cultural practice ending, and it is measured because somebody counted the hives twice, decades apart.

Named at the precision the sources support, with the period each record describes. Countries are not cultures, and a monograph dates its fieldwork rather than the present.

Cultural significance
Bees appear in the surviving codex and in iconography, and ceremonies for the increase of the hives are documented into the modern period, which places the practice inside a religious frame rather than beside one.
Pressures and conservation
Melipona beecheii is of conservation concern in parts of its range, and the practice and the bee decline together: fewer keepers means fewer managed colonies, and less forest means fewer wild ones to replace them.
What this page does not claim
Unbroken continuity from pre-Columbian practice to the present. The evidence documents the practice in each period; it does not establish that any particular modern meliponario descends without interruption from a pre-conquest one, and some current activity is explicitly revival.
