Both the incidental consumption of bee bread during comb harvesting and the commercial trapped-pollen trade are current and observable.

Two different substances

Bee pollen and bee bread are not the same thing, and the distinction is routinely dropped. Bee pollen is collected from returning foragers by a trap that brushes the pellets off their legs; it is raw plant pollen with a little nectar and bee secretion. Bee bread is pollen packed into comb cells and left to ferment with lactic acid bacteria, which changes its chemistry and its keeping properties.

Eating bee bread out of the comb is part of wild honey harvesting in a number of traditions — where a comb is cut, the pollen stores come with it. Trapped pollen as a separate product requires equipment and is modern.

What is known and what is sold

Pollen is nutritionally substantial: high in protein, with a range of micronutrients, and highly variable in composition because it depends entirely on what the bees were foraging. That variability is the same problem propolis has, and it undercuts general claims in the same way — a compositional analysis of one sample describes that sample.

Claims that bee pollen treats allergies, boosts athletic performance or supplies complete nutrition are not supported by good clinical evidence. As with the other hive products, HoneyHQ records what is eaten and where, and leaves effect to the health pages.
