Japanese box-hive beekeeping
Stacked wooden boxes for Apis cerana japonica, harvested once a year by taking the top box. A minority practice alongside a much larger introduced Apis mellifera sector, sustained partly by a bee that can defend itself against giant hornets.

The hive and the harvest
Boxes are stacked vertically, and the colony builds downward. Honey accumulates at the top, so the annual harvest is taken by removing the uppermost box and cutting the comb from it, then adding a fresh box at the bottom. It is a simple, low-intervention system suited to a bee that absconds if disturbed.
Colonies are usually attracted rather than installed: a baited box is set out and a swarm moves in. Yields are modest, and the honey is sold at a substantial premium over imported honey.
Hornets, and why the native bee persists
Apis cerana japonica defends itself against the giant hornet by forming a ball around a scout and raising the temperature past the hornet's tolerance while staying within its own. Apis mellifera, introduced and with no evolutionary history of the predator, has no such defence and colonies can be destroyed.
Why the yields stay low
Apis cerana japonica colonies are small, swarm readily and abscond if disturbed, so the management that raises yields in a mellifera hive is counterproductive here. A single annual harvest from the top box is the system working as intended rather than a limitation being tolerated.
The result is honey sold at a substantial premium in small quantities, often direct from the keeper. Commercial Japanese honey production is overwhelmingly introduced mellifera in frame hives, and the two sectors barely overlap in either method or market.
Where the practice sits today
Native-bee keeping is pursued by hobbyists, smallholders and some temple and community projects, and colonies are often kept for interest and for the local bee rather than for a crop. Regional groups publish guidance, and swarm-attracting boxes are set out in numbers each spring.
Cultural significance
The native bee and its hornet defence are widely known in Japan, and keeping it carries an element of conserving a local animal as well as producing honey.
What this page does not claim
That box-hive keeping of the native bee is the dominant form of Japanese beekeeping. It is a minority practice; commercial production is overwhelmingly introduced Apis mellifera in frame hives.
