Mad honey

Honey from rhododendron nectar carrying grayanotoxins, harvested deliberately in the Himalaya and the Black Sea region and used in small quantities. One of very few traditional claims about honey with a confirmed pharmacological mechanism, and a genuine poisoning hazard.

Where the toxin comes from

Several Rhododendron species produce grayanotoxins in nectar. Where a colony forages heavily on them during a concentrated flowering, the honey carries enough to affect a person: nausea, dizziness, low blood pressure and a slowed heart rate, occasionally severe enough to need hospital treatment. Recovery is usual and fatalities are rare.

It is a floral and seasonal phenomenon rather than a property of any bee. In the Himalaya it is associated with spring harvests of Apis laboriosa honey from cliff colonies foraging on rhododendron; around the Black Sea it comes from Apis mellifera on Rhododendron ponticum.

How it is used, and the ancient account

Documented use is in small quantities, taken as a tonic or an intoxicant, and priced well above ordinary honey. The Turkish trade in deli bal is the better documented of the two markets and reaches export.

The market

Deli bal from the Black Sea coast is sold domestically and exported at prices far above ordinary honey, and Himalayan spring honey is traded similarly. Both markets are supplied in small quantities and both attract mislabelling, since the premium is attached to a claim about flowering that a buyer cannot verify.

Clinical case reports continue to appear from both regions and from countries importing the honey, which is unusually direct evidence that the trade is live and that the toxin survives the supply chain.

Cultural significance

One of the few honeys valued specifically for a physiological effect rather than for flavour, and one of the few whose reputation is older than any chemistry.

What this page does not claim

Clinical case series from the Black Sea region document bradycardia, hypotension, nausea and syncope after ingestion, with the toxin identified. Regulatory and food-safety guidance treats it as a recognised hazard.

What this does not claim: It does not establish any therapeutic benefit, a safe dose, or that all rhododendron honey is affected. Toxin concentration varies enormously with the flowering, the species and the batch, and that variability is precisely why a dose cannot be given.
