The largest honey bee in the world, nesting on sheer Himalayan cliff faces at altitudes up to four thousand metres, and the source of the red honey harvested by Nepalese honey hunters descending rope ladders down rock walls. It was regarded as a high-altitude form of the giant honey bee until the 1980s and is now generally treated as a separate species, and it is the only honey bee adapted to genuine mountain cold.

Can it sting?

As defensive as its lowland relative and in a more dangerous setting. Colonies commit large numbers of workers and pursue intruders, and the honey hunters who work these cliffs do so on rope ladders with the nest above them — there is no route of escape. Serious stinging incidents are a routine occupational hazard of the harvest.

How to recognise it

The largest of all honey bees, over 20 mm, and noticeably darker than Apis dorsata — a black abdomen with narrow pale bands and a dense covering of hair on the thorax that is a straightforward adaptation to cold.

Migrates down the mountain to lower altitude in autumn and returns in spring, rather than overwintering in place. The dense hair covering and a demonstrated ability to fly at temperatures near freezing are what make high-altitude foraging possible at all.

Builds a single exposed comb on the underside of an overhanging cliff, typically on a southwest-facing face at 2,500 to 3,500 m. Many colonies often occupy one rock wall, and the same cliffs are used year after year — some for as long as anyone in the nearby villages can remember.

Lifecycle

  1. Spring ascentColonies migrate up the mountain in spring as the rhododendron and high-altitude flora come into bloom, rebuilding combs on traditional cliff sites.
  2. Summer build-upThe colony stores honey in the upper comb. Spring honey from rhododendron nectar carries grayanotoxins; later-season honey generally does not.
  3. Autumn descentThe colony abandons the cliff and migrates to lower altitude for the winter, rebuilding again on arrival.

Where it lives and what it does

Habitat
High-altitude cliff faces and gorges in the Himalaya, in a landscape of rhododendron forest and alpine meadow.
Distribution
Nepal, Bhutan, northern India, southwest China and northern Myanmar, at altitudes generally between 1,000 and 4,000 m.
Behaviour
Migratory, defensive, and remarkable for its cold tolerance — it forages at ambient temperatures at which other honey bees cannot fly, using a combination of dense insulation and elevated thoracic temperature. Like Apis dorsata it performs the shimmering defensive wave.
Pollination role
The dominant pollinator of high-altitude Himalayan flora, including rhododendron, and of mountain agriculture. Its cold tolerance means it is working at times and altitudes no other bee can, which makes it effectively irreplaceable in those systems.

Very high, and functionally unique — no other bee covers this altitude and temperature range.

What it forages on
Rhododendron, high-altitude herbs and mountain crops. The rhododendron association is what produces the toxic spring honey.

Honey

Stores a harvestable surplus

Produces the honey sold as mad honey or red honey — reddish, bitter and, from the spring rhododendron flow, containing grayanotoxins that make it genuinely poisonous. Later-season honey from the same colonies is generally not toxic, and the distinction is invisible to a buyer.

Relationship with people

How people interact with it
The Nepalese cliff honey harvest is among the most photographed and least understood traditional practices in the world. Hunters of the Gurung and other communities descend handmade rope ladders down sheer faces, cut comb with long poles, and lower it in baskets, with smoke below to move the bees. The practice is genuinely dangerous, culturally significant, and increasingly distorted by tourism and by international demand for the toxic honey.
Management
Cannot be hived, for the same reasons as its lowland relative. Protection consists of regulating harvest and restricting access to cliffs.
Conservation
Under real pressure. Over-harvesting driven by the international mad honey trade, habitat change, pesticide use in valley agriculture and the pressures of harvest tourism have all been implicated in local declines. Because colonies aggregate on a small number of traditional cliffs, damage is concentrated rather than diffuse.
