Mad honey can cause serious poisoning, including dangerous heart rhythm and blood pressure effects.
Grayanotoxin poisoning from rhododendron honey is a recognised clinical entity with a substantial case literature, particularly from Turkish hospitals along the Black Sea coast. It binds to voltage-gated sodium channels and produces nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, hypotension and bradycardia. Cases requiring atropine and cardiac monitoring are routinely reported, and food safety authorities including regulators in the EU and Turkey recognise the hazard.
What this does not claim: This is not a claim that all rhododendron honey is toxic — grayanotoxin content varies widely by species, region and season, and much rhododendron honey contains none in meaningful amounts. Nor is it a claim that poisoning is usually fatal: deaths are rare and most patients recover fully within a day or two with supportive care. It says nothing about any traditional use being effective.
