Mechanised honey extraction
Spinning honey out of intact comb instead of crushing it, so the comb goes back to the bees. The invention that turned the movable frame from a curiosity into an economic proposition.

Standard practice wherever frame hives are kept, from single-colony hobbyists to industrial lines, and directly observable.
Why crushing was the constraint
Before extraction, taking honey meant cutting comb and pressing or draining it. The wax was destroyed in the process, and a colony that has to rebuild comb spends a great deal of honey doing it — the conventional working figure is that wax is expensive for bees to make. Every harvest therefore cost next season's crop.
Franz von Hruschka's centrifugal extractor, demonstrated in the 1860s, removed that cost. Uncap the cells, spin the frame, and the honey leaves while the comb survives to be returned. Combined with wax foundation — sheets of embossed wax that give the bees a start and control cell size — the same combs could be used for years.
The modern sequence
- UncappingThe wax cappings sealing each cell are sliced off, by heated knife or automatic uncapper. The cappings are a wax crop in their own right.
- ExtractionFrames are spun in a drum. Small operations use a hand or motor extractor holding a few frames; commercial lines run radial extractors taking dozens at a time.
- Straining and settlingCoarse wax and debris are strained out, then the honey stands in a tank so air bubbles and fine particles rise and can be skimmed. This is the step popular accounts confuse with filtration.
- Storage or bottlingHoney goes into bulk drums for sale to packers, or is bottled directly. Bulk drums are how most of the world's honey moves.
Gentle warming appears at several of these steps because cold honey barely flows. That is a viscosity problem rather than a processing philosophy, and it is distinct from the heavier heating and fine filtration used to delay crystallisation in retail honey — which this site treats on its own pages.
What it did to the industry
Yields per colony rose because comb was no longer being rebuilt each season, honey could be taken in quantity without ending the colony, and the work became fast enough to scale. Commercial honey production in the modern sense begins here rather than with the frame hive alone.
What this page does not claim
That extraction is the same as the filtration and heating applied to retail honey, or that warming honey to make it flow is what 'processed' means on a label. Those are separate steps with separate purposes, treated on the processing pages.
